Yesterday, the AW-Drones project attended the first day of the OPTICS2 final dissemination event, dedicated to aviation research on safety. OPTICS2 invited us as a relevant representative in the Safety Action Area.
Marco Ducci, drone safety and regulation expert at Deep Blue and deputy coordinator of AW-Drones, represented the project. In its presentation, Ducci highlighted our contribution in the identification of technical standards; an endeavour that will help fulfil EU drone regulation requirements.
In the past three years, AW-Drones assessed more than 600 standards against requirements from SORA, U-space and SC-Light UAS. The AW-Drones Standards Information Portal, a “metastandard”, will make available the results of all this work. In the end, the Portal will contribute to support all the actors in the growing drone industry; in particular, it will effectively aid UAS operators by identifying all the standards applicable to every requirement.
About the OPTICS2 research project
OPTICS2 assesses the progress of European Aviation Safety and Security Research and Innovation (R&I) towards the goals of Flightpath 2050. In addition, OPTICS2 provides recommendations to steer the research in case certain needs are not being met, or need corrections; for example, in case of the introduction of new disruptive technologies, or global events such as COVID-19.
Is European aviation safety and security research on the right track? The OPTICS2 Final Dissemination event (27-28th of September 2021) tried to answer this question.
Specifically, Day 1 presented the Safety part of the OPTICS2 research; project partners illustrated key Safety Action Areas, while the coordinators of relevant EU projects in the Safety sector introduced their research. Similarly, Day 2 explored the current landscape in the Security sector, with the presentation of key Security Action Areas and the introduction of the most relevant EU research initiatives by their coordinators.
Thanks to the OPTICS2 team for offering us this opportunity!
